Apply for a Certificate Course in Portuguese Language and Culture

You can now apply for a certificate course in Portuguese language and culture at the University of Nairobi. This is after the Launch of the course on Tuesday January 29, 2019 at the UoN towers.

The course which will take two semesters is offered in the Department of Linguistics and Language in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.  The course is a partnership project between UoN, Cameos Institute and government of Portugal.

During the launch, Luisa Fragoso, the Charge De Affairs, Embassy of Portugal appreciated the support the University has given the Embassy towards this project until seeing it come into fruition. She urged the students to take the opportunity of studying Portuguese,”  this course will be the beginning of a journey as we will offer you scholarship to study in Universities in Portugal, You will also stand a chance of mastering skills at the  centre of translation and interpretation and work as a translator and /or an interpreter. “

“Language is a tool and a passport for whatever you want to do with it” remarked Luisa Fragoso. She added, “There will be cultural events, a Portuguese speaking day among other things to showcase the Portuguese culture and raise the awareness among the students.”

Ambassadors and representatives of the embassies of Angola, Brazil, Mozambique and Spain were in attendance and they all unanimously pledged their support towards the course.

Prof. Julius Ogeng’o, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs, welcomed the move, “We are happy and ready to collaborate with Portugal through the Cameos Institute and also with the other Portuguese speaking countries especially the ones represented here today in promoting Portuguese culture and language.” He was speaking on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi


This University has a Department of Linguistics and Languages whose mandate is to ensure that both Kenyan and foreign languages are promoted through teaching and research.

The department has a number of language and language related programmes from certificate course to PhD level. Some of these programmes are Korean Studies, Chinese Studies, German Studies, Arabic Studies, Language and Communication and, lastly, Linguistics where our students have the opportunity to study and carry out research on the structure of languages.

Prof. Ogeng’o concluded by saying, “The Department has therefore already welcomed Portuguese language on board. The Certificate Course in Portuguese Language and Culture is a programme that we are proud to launch following senate approval.”
