Beyond Poverty and Vulnerability in Kenya is the latest publication that has been launched by the University of Nairobi press. Authored by Mwangi Maathai, the book tackles issues that the youth in Kenya are going through.
Speaking during the event, the Chief Guest, Prof. PLO Lumumba challenged the youth to avoid the culture of dependency, harness the resources within the African continent and liberate Africa. He urged the youth to deconstruct the house of poverty that has been built over the years. “If you need things that require effort, you must put in more effort. Our Young men must see Africa as a rich continent and not the West, as the green grass,” he said.
The Author, Mwangi Mathai urged the youth to see themselves as global citizens in order to achieve success. He encouraged the young people to avoid depending on charity, embrace ICT innovation, disentangle themselves from wrong political associations, to shun consumption mindset, avoid corruption and embrace devolution.
The University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi who was represented by Prof. Henry Mutoro , the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs noted that the University Press is vibrant. He urged the guests to explore the various partnerships with the University, “ We can create greater impact by working together, ” he said.
Also present during the book launch include : Prof. Lucy Irungu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Production and Extension, Prof. Peter Ngau, Principal College of Architecture and Engineering, Prof. Enos Njeru, Principal, College of Humanities and Social Sciences , University of Nairobi Press Managing Editor, Mr. Josphat Kirimania among other distinguished guests.
