Staff and students who have excelled in different fields presented the awards and certificates to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter Mbithi on Wednesday, July 11, 2018.

 The trophies were from different sports teams, UoN travelling theatre and researchers.

 

“The University of Nairobi is a great institution with highly trained staff, good students with rich diversity and backgrounds. Our great diversity is our strength and I am happy when we harness this to produce impressive results. These are the building blocks that will influence the future of our great university,” said Prof. Peter Mbithi, during the presentation of awards ceremony.

 

The Vice Chancellor urged students to excel in all their endevours , both academically and in extra curriculum activities. “Whatever you engage in and excel, you are building this great university. Be it sports, theatre, research or innovation. We are together building a great institution that future generations will aspire to be part of,” he said.  Prof. Mbithi opined that sports, drama and research, are what makes the university great. The university is about influencing the society.

 

The Vice Chancellor called upon staff and students to embrace their diversity, work together and achieve greatness and shun negativities like tribalism, the cancer that is tearing apart our beautiful country. He observed that the university must lead in national reconciliation and cohesion.

 

Mr. Mbaabu Murithi, Director of Sports and Games, revealed that the various sports teams have bagged 98 trophies in the year 2018. The teams that have excelled in the recent past include; the rugby team (mean machine), hockey team, basketball, volleyball, tennis, handball, swimming, netball, football among other teams.

 

During the event, prominent researchers like Prof. Peter Ngau , Principal, College of Architecture and Engineering and  Dr. Jane Ambuko from the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences were also recognized for their scholarly contributions.
