20 bright but needy students received scholarships from the Chinese Embassy in a ceremony that was held at Taifa Hall on Monday, November 14, 2016.
The Chinese Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Xiu Lianfa presented the scholarship awards.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Chinese ambassador encouraged the students to work hard and not look at the financial constraints. He told the students to be great ambassadors of both Kenya and China relations and the University of Nairobi.
Since the establishment of the Chinese Embassy Scholarship in 2014, 58 UoN students have benefitted from the programme.
Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor , Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs , Prof. Henry Mutoro, thanked the Chinese government for supporting the students and giving them an opportunity to complete their studies. Prof. Mutoro said that the award of the scholarships is a demonstration of strong ties between the University of Nairobi and the Chinese government which spans over 10 years. The cooperation has resulted in the establishment of the Confucius Institute and an active staff and student exchange programme.
The students, drawn from various disciplines were identified as genuine needy students selected after due verification of family backgrounds to ascertain their neediness by the Special Students Advisor, Prof. Godfrey Muriuki.
