The Graduation ceremony has seen over 8500 graduands conferred with degrees and diplomas. Graduands were largely drawn from the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and College of Health Sciences.

A record of 56 PhDs, 2477 Masters degrees, 5177 Bachelors degrees, 49 Postgrad diplomas, 143 ordinary diplomas and 2 fellowship awards were presented.

During the team building, the finance officer, Mr. Peter Busienei urged the staff from both departments to work as a team. This is in line with the University’s core value of team work. He also urged them to be stewards and brand ambassadors of the University as they always ensure that the University gets value for its money at all times.

The Internal Audit staff was also encouraged to enhance their skills always as they seek to increase the University’s financial prudence and to be a world class university. The University budget, procurement plan, performance contracting and the strategic plan are among the financial tools that the staff were urged to have knowledge of.

Beyond Poverty and Vulnerability in Kenya is the latest publication that has been launched by the University of Nairobi press. Authored by Mwangi Maathai, the book tackles issues that the youth in Kenya are going through.

Speaking during the event, the Chief Guest, Prof. PLO Lumumba challenged the youth to avoid the culture of dependency, harness the resources within the African continent and liberate Africa.  He urged the youth to deconstruct the house of poverty that has been built over the years. “If you need things that require effort, you must put in more effort. Our Young men must see Africa as a rich continent and not the West, as the green grass,” he said.

The President called on the youth to take advantage of access to education to achieve progress.
“The university will bring economic growth to Nandi Hills town. Let us all strive to expand our economy because no one else will come to develop our country," said the President. “This new university will be opened in two years time.”
 
The Deputy President William Ruto, said that the leaders of the region had insisted that the first course the university college offers should be law to represent the freedom and justice that Koitalel stood for.
 
"We want the university college to produce people who will defend our freedoms and the sovereignty of our nation," he said. The university will also offer business and sports related courses.
 
While thanking the President for the President for appointing UoN to mentor the new university college, the Chancellor, Dr. Rattansi pledged to donate books worth Kshs. 18 Million.

University of Nairobi Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, has been honoured by the Italian government for her exemplary role in promoting culture and the Italian language in Kenya. She has been at the forefront in strengthening the ties, between the two countries.

The award , ‘Knight of the order of the star of Italy’ is among the highest honours given to Italian citizens who have displayed exemplary performance in the course of their life and in service of country and mankind. The award was presented to her at the Italian Embassy by H.E Mauro Massoni.

The Ambassador, who was speaking during the 71st Independence Day Celebrations noted that the Italian government and the Kenyan government have warm working relations that went a notch higher as President Uhuru Kenyatta attended the G7 Summit in Italy last month.

Over the years, the Italian government has been considerably friendly to the Kenyan government and supported various efforts by the government to transform the country and the living standards of the people.
